Sony to have its own tablet

Japanese multinational Sony today announced that its first tablet will hit Japan on September 17, in order to compete in a market led by the popular Apple iPad.

It is expected that the price of the Sony S series tablet, with a 9.4 inch screen and Android based operating system, is around 45,000 yen (406 euros) for the 16-gigabyte model, according to Sony sources cited by the local Kyodo news agency.

The group plans to release the series P tablet in October or November, equipped with two 5.5 inch folding screens and designed for mobile communications.

Sony's goal is to become the Japanese market leader for tablets with Android operating systems for the 2012 fiscal year, ending March 2013, said vice president of Sony Marketing, Akihiro Matsubara.

It is estimated that the Japanese market for tablet computers will reach two million units in the current fiscal year of 2011 and will increase to 3.2 million in the next fiscal year of 2012.

On Wednesday Sony unveiled their S & P tablets in Berlin as part of the catalog of new products for this autumn, during which both models are expected to also reach the European market.
