How many are actually unemployed in Spain? Labor has accounted for more than four million

How many are actually unemployed in Spain? Labor has accounted for more than four million. In December there were 4,175,433 registered job applicants in the Public Employment Service. However, according to the Ministry of Labor, the number of unemployed did not reach four million in 2009. Specifically, the organizations data governed by Celestino Corbacho accounted for 3,923,603 unemployed. And although in December the increase was much lower than the same month in 2008, in the past year nearly 795,000 people have joined the unemployment list.

Why the difference? This is because the Ministry of Labor removed those unemployed with special conditions of work from the list: either because of limited hours or because they are seeking work at their home or abroad. About 200,000 people had these characteristics later this year. The total balance reached 4,175,433 unemployed. From this figure, it also subtracts the unemployed who are receiving training courses or those who receive the agricultural subsidy. In total, 450,185 people are no longer counted as unemployed, otherwise said, the government has thinned the unemployment list by 10%.

In November, the total number of job seekers stood at 5,322,299 persons, compared with 5,325,731. More than 950,000 people were already employed. For job seekers with special conditions in the eleventh month of the year, there were 208,885 people, 10,530 more unemployed than in December. As for the unemployed who have been taking courses in December the figure rose by almost 15,000 more than in the previous month.

Year on year, December 2008 to December 2009, the total of unemployed (including those applicants looking for work with a certain schedule and taking courses) grew by 20%, 808,713 people, compared with the increase of 794,650 according to the Ministry of Labor which excludes the two groups mentioned above. The applicants with regard to these special conditions have increased by 24% from the 150,680 unemployed in late 2008. Those who receive training courses have increased only 5%.

By sex and sector

Taking sex into account, male unemployment is the most affected due to the industrial crisis and the bursting of the housing bubble. By the end of 2008 there were more unemployed women than men, however in 2009 the roles were reversed, albeit by a narrow margin. 2,095,037 unemployed men in December 2009, compared to 2,080,396 unemployed women.  In December of last year, the number of unemployed women reached 1,716,382 compared to 1,650,338 men.

In terms of sectors, unemployment continues to prey primarily on three: services, industry and construction. Thus, unemployment in the first, has increased from 20.4% to 2,306,108 unemployed in December 2009. The construction sector continues to lose jobs. Specifically, 24.2% to 804,128 unemployed, while the industry lost another 21%. Only agriculture remained almost stable, losing 1% of jobs.
