The shareholders of Barclays Bank, the Spanish branch of the British bank, have approved the appointment of former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Pedro Solbes, as new director of the organization; the bank has informed the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV).

This month, the bank announced the appointment of Solbes as director of the group for international affairs and as member of the board of directors in Spain, the latter was approved at the meeting on Monday. Also approved were Arnaud Thierry, Jean Claude Schvartz and Deanna Watson Oppenheirmer.

Thus, the number of directors of the organization expands to eleven. The bank has also re-elected Carlos Martinez de Campos and Marcelino Oreja as directors.

Solbes is also an independent member of the board of the Italian electricity company Enel, owned by Endes, since last April 29. He was Minister of Finance from 2004 to 2009 and European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs from 1999 to 2004. Solbes adds to the list of politicians who, after leaving office, have gone  onto develop their activities in the private sector.
