"Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," is the best release so far this year
"Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" generated $158 million in sales in its first five days in U.S. and Canadian theaters, beating "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" for the best such opening this year. The new sequel to the adventures of the boy wizard, produced by Time Warner, had revenues of $77.8 million during its first weekend.
There are two more films yet to be released, based on the final book "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows."
'Harry Potter' may boost its revenue in the third weekend when it is distributed to IMAX theaters, which can account for 10% of the weekend total for a film.
In "The Half-Blood Prince," Harry and his friends Hermione and Ron are threatened by the growing power of Voldemort. The film includes the death of one of the main characters.
Sacha Baron Cohen’s comedy "Bruno" dropped to fourth place from first with $8.3 million earned. In total, the film has taken $49.5 million since its premiere on 10th July.
Ice Age
"Ice Age: Dawn of the dinosaurs' achieved second place with $17.6 million taken at the weekend. The film chronicles the new adventures of the prehistoric animals, including mammoths, the sloth bear and the saber tooth tiger. Queen Latifah, John Leguizamo and Denis Leary provided their voices. The film has earned $151.9 million since its release on 1st July.
"Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," was in third place with $13.7 million in ticket sales this weekend. Its figures are impressive: $363.8 million since June 24 at the box office in the United States.
